These beautiful sisal baskets are handcrafted in Zimbabwe by women who have been affected by AIDS in some way, whether they are caring for AIDS orphans, undergoing treatment themselves, or raising children as single mothers. The baskets are made from sisal, a fiber that comes from the tropical plant Agave.

To create each basket, the fibers are carefully harvested, dried, hand-dyed, and dried again. The weaver then rolls the fiber against their leg until the perfect thread is drawn out. The result is a stunning and unique basket that takes an average of 30-40 hours to create, making them one of the most labor-intensive of all African baskets for their size.

Traditionally given as gifts, these baskets symbolize a long and happy life.
